Rhubarb mowing accident
« on: February 20, 2007, 00:50 »
Hi there

I have a clod of rhubarb up the back garden, and at the end of last year on the last mow I accidentally ran the mower over the Rhubarb and chopped what was left of it. I was gutted. thought it was all over for the thing which has produced really well in the past, and it seems to be quite an old one too.

I notice yesterday it was starting to grow again from the cavity that was left from the poor things mutilation!

Are the chances good that it will go well again this year or will it never fully recover?

Hi Leeky, if there's one thing I've learned about rhubarb, it's that NOTHING kills it. As long as there's a bit of root in the ground, it will come back. Might take its time at first, but it'll be back. Same for peonies. If you're worried, then put a bit of compost over the accident site to encourage it faster.  :)

GrannieAnnie, there must have been something in the soil that the rhubard didn't like. Surprising, as it's not at all fussy. I had hardpan clay and the roots happily pushed through that and grew like Triffids. Perhaps the soil pH was too much either way? Hard to tell. You can hack the roots with pickaxe and if one bit is left behind, off it goes.
And Munty, that's Terminator 'I'll be back'!

Thanks Trillium, I'll never know relaly, but at least in my present house, the rhubarb is growing well that I got for free when teh horticultural nursery my friend worked at closed down.  Also we have it growing wild in the land drain at the back of the house, but that is very strong and always stays green, so needs lots of sugar!!!!

Hi folks!, thanks loads for the tips and advice.

I had a good old inspection of the Rhubarb today and its a big one.    what I thought was terracotta drain pipe in the ground is actually the roots

Seems to be several "clumps" of root there spaced about 4 feet across and the one I chopped is filled with rainwater, holding it like a bowl but its budding like a trooper. (budding?)

I'm relieved!
