I tend to has the beans stay off the ground and out of the soil

No its not neccessary.  my beans stay off the floor despite the shortness of teh plant and the odd one or two that don't wash easily.

mine are growing in a large tub and I tied them up sometime ago because it is so windy where I live.  Today I went to pick the first load and the problem was it was quite difficult to actually get in amongst them.
I was going to cut the strings, but its still blowing a gale.  Mrs Bouquet
