British basil
« on: January 18, 2014, 17:17 »
Just going through the catalogues to top up seeds I still need and noticed that T & M do 'British basil'. Now for some reason I have this down on my list so must have read about it somewhere, yet it says it's new for 2014. Suitable for growing outdoors in this country but I am wondering if it will be less tasty and pungent as the 'normal' stuff. Has anyone bought this elsewhere and can offer an opinion?

I have not grown this particular basil so cannot help with a review.

I grow rows of basil some years (short rows across the bed) , sowing a pinch in small modules and then plating out in a clump once the soil has warmed up, usually around the end of May/beginning of June.

It is just the usual green leaved one ---usually does OK  :D

Thanks Sunshine. To date I have only grown on shop bought basil in the polytunnel. Never seems to flourish though for some reason.

Probably because it was in near perfect conditions and very 'soft' as a result.

Dead easy to germinate. In fact you can also use to seeds and grow microgreens with them. I use the freebie ones that I get like that usually

Ok thanks I will try to grow my own. Often wondered about the supermarket ones as they are made up of loads of plants crammed together in one pot. I've tried splitting them but maybe they don't transplant too well.

That's odd. I posted this on my original thread re British basil. Maybe it's the wine taking over. Hopefully a mod will be kind enough to move it to its rightful place. TIA
