Pea Germination.
« on: May 27, 2014, 19:02 »
I have been growing these little so & sos for years with no problems.
This year however problems have set in with a vengeance.
Regardless of method tried germination has been non existent across the board of several varieties.
I have tried at home in pots (3 per 5") in modules. and in the ground.
On the plot and in the unheated greenhouse (including sowing in lengths of gutter) nish.
Everything else has gone fine including parsnips that refused to play last year but have gone stupid this. :(
HELP!!!! PLEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZE ???

Easiest way to find the problem is to 'chit' the seed in damp tissue.  If it germinates, it's not the seed, it's what you're transplanting them in.  If it doesn't germinate... Lost a lot of seed last year to 'contaminated' compost...

Have you tipped the compost out and checked the condition of the seeds? Have they rotted or been stolen by mice?

A few have been stolen by furry fiends but the majority have either rotted or turned to powder. I have used the same growing medium throughout and they have been kept slightly moist

Does seem a bit unlikely that all of your different varieties are duff - it has been a bit wet and cold for many lately which is not helpful.

Agree with Auntiemogs - a test chit will at least confirm whether the seed is viable or not.

Soak for a few hours and then put between damp (not wet) kitchen paper in a covered plastic box and if OK they should chit in 1-3 days in a warm place.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
