Using Free Compost
« on: February 23, 2013, 17:22 »
My local council allows us to have as much free compost as we want.

They collect all the recycled green materials ... compost it down and you can collect.

It is Black and very well rotted, masses of worms .... which all seems fine.
It is obviously not as fine & sieved as bagged compost ...

I have today added 4" of this over the ground, and will mix it in well with my Mantis ...
The Q is as this is not rotted farmyard manure it's nutrient quality is probably not high ... but it will certainly improve the soil.
Should I think of adding anything with it to improve nutrients ?
There are those that always like to find fault, if you spot a Typo ... consider put there for you.

I agree with Sunshine, our council send everything away for processing. I wouldn't be surprised if they sell it.

My council offers 3 bags (bring your own) of compost for free - I'll try and take 3 x ton bags if I can!!

If I have to use reasonable sized bags I will be returning a few time... in disguise if I have to!

Some councils have private contractors who do the composting. So the private contractor charges because it is a business for them.
