Looking after grapes
« on: October 30, 2008, 22:25 »
Hi.  I'm thinking of getting another allotment plot to grow just grapes.  However, I'm not sure if it will be too much to look after 2 plots as I work full time.
Once the vines are planted will there be much maintenance required?

Sorry you've had no reply, lobot, I think it's down to something like this being beyond most folk's experience.

I don't think you're being deliberately ignored.

Anyway, this post will pop it back to near the top!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We bought an old grape vine a while back reduced at Wyevale. We believe it was at a vine yard in France or Germany and past its life so they pot them up and sell them on.
We have read lots on keeping them.Basically they need planting with grit and manure. They like sunny positions and need pruning in Autumn once all the leaves have dropped, this is done quite harsh to remove deadwood and thin out.
I would think for you growing on a plot they would need good secure frame to climb up and train along.Weeding underneath but other than that they just do their own thing.

i am doing somthing very simialar, i have ordered 50 grape vines from http://www.vineandwine.co.uk/, you want to look into the vartity farely carefully and the rootstock, most likely so44, and preparing the ground is very important.

next you need to decided how you want to train them, several options are avaliable i am going for a high double guyot, the idea being i will be growing the vines over the paths between my veg beds, i have gone for rechienstiener on so44 and seyval blanc on 5bb.

i hope this is of some help, i am not expert but i have done a bit of reasearch before mine arrive in april.

Thanks for the replies.
I need to do some research before I actually get the vines.  If it's just a case of tying up new growth and pruning I think I can manage.
I understand that most people only have 1 or 2 vines but figured what goes for them could be scaled up.
I'll keep surfing.

I'd be interested in some guidance in this area.  I bought 2 vines last yr.  They did nowt.

This yr one has gone mad and grown around 12 foot with around 1/2 doz 6 foot off shoots.

Would like advice on how to cut back, which to keep etc.

No sign of any flower or grapes yet.
