Feed left out at night
« on: February 09, 2014, 07:17 »
Hi I am new to chicken keeping. I have been removing my feeders from the run overnight. Is this correct? Also the pellets are getting wet sometimes and then form clumps is this still ok for the chickens? Sorry to ask such silly questions. Just want to do the right thing for my hens.  :)

First of all no questions are silly! It is always easy when you know the answers already.

It is fine and desirable to remove the feeders at night. Your chooks will not move whilst roosting and will not be looking for food. Very importantly DO NOT feed wet feed. Itstarts to go mouldy very quickly and this will make your chooks sick. Just because you cannot see the mould does not mean it is not there.

Do continue to ask, it is what the forum is here for :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

leaving their feed out overnight will encourage rats I'm afraid so you would be better to keep putting the feed away.
if the birds are eating the damp food straight away that is no problem (it is only the same as making a mash up with hot water and layers) but do not save it for another day as it can go mouldy very quickly. You would be better having feeders with rain hats on and also placing them in a sheltered spot.
Staffies are softer than you think.
