Sick Chickens
« on: August 16, 2008, 01:11 »
Hello,
I have a few chickens that seem to have a cold...They are  sneezing quite a bit. I had one that was coughing and breathing odd and I gave her antibiotic and now she's fine. Could I just give all my hens antibiotic? If so,Will I be able to eat the eggs? Thanks for reading!

Not eating the eggs depends on what medication you have given the hen....anywhere between 7 and 28 days. The others might catch whatever it is your hen might have...any chance your could move her to somewhere on her own?

I presume in YS you can get antibiotics without consulting a vet.

There is information here http://www.drugs.com/vet/terramycin-100.html

about Terramycin (there are 3 different concentrations so I have picked the middle one just as an example).  If you scroll down it says:

Warning: At 500 G/ton Level, Withdraw 24 Hours Before Slaughter. Zero-day Withdrawal Period For Lower Use Levels. In Low Calcium Feeds Withdraw 3 Days Before Slaughter. Do Not Administer To Chickens Producing Eggs For Human Consumption.

I would guess this information is aimed at the farming industry but as there is a short withdrawal period before slaughter and consumption of meat then an longer period of a couple of weeks after finishing the antibiotic would seem reasonable before eating eggs.  This is what a vet recommended I did after using Baytril.
