Overwintering?
« on: June 11, 2011, 22:07 »
well now im blown away. I thought you planted stuff in spring and got to eat it autumn or next year depending on what it is.

this morning got a catalogue from marshalls all with overwintering crops in it, i never knew you could do that.

is this a common thing to do or best left for folk who been doing it for a while. its thrown me as ive already drawn up my plans for next year and they assumed i would be started with a bare plot apart from the fruit beds

thanks all

I know you can grow many things over winter but so far I been growing:

Onions (only certain varieties will over winter)
Garlic
Brussels sprouts
Leeks

(Then of course there are the perrenials, like rhubarb, strawberries and the fruit bushes you mention).

winter cabbage(use till marchish) and some to overwinter for spring (use April May), winter cauli, Purple sprouting Broccoli (spring) all get to be sown/planted about now

plus the ones John has listed

If you decide to grow over-wintering onions, don't grow too many because they will not store for very long, whereas the spring planted ones store through winter.
Some people are tempted by winter/Christmas potatoes, but unless you have a greenhouse IMO they don't really work, and they are quite expensive to buy. (There are quite a few old threads about them if you search)
