Best place to store hatching eggs?????
« on: May 30, 2010, 17:07 »
We have literally just got back from buying hatching eggs (chicken) from a local breeder.
We have travelled 10 minuites in the car, so think they need to settle before I put them under my 2 broody hens.
Where is the best place to store them for 24 hours?
I know to rest them nose down, but what shall I rest them in? Simply an egg box?

I would appreciate speedy replies if possible  ;)  :).

I was told by someone experienced that there is no need to rest eggs point down if they're going to be incubated on their side under a broody :)

I'd leave them to rest (in an egg box) at room temp until this evening, and you can slip them under the broody tonight, once she settles down for the evening.

Oh, okay   :).

I have been told by a member on this forum in an earlier topic that you have to rest them nose down.

Anyway, they are resting nose down in an egg box at the moment. Shall I turn them round so they are resting normally with the broad end down??

Great, thank you very much Casey  :).

The breeders briefly mentioned that we should leave the eggs to settle for 24 hours.

Do you agree with Casey, that I can put them under later today, or the chicken breeders, that I should put them under after 24 hours? Both seem to know what they are talking about.

I have been told 2 different times by 2 different people , so would be interested to see what you all think.

Many thanks  ;)

I'd leave them till tomorrow, especially as that is what the breeder recommended to you. It helps if they have been a bit knocked about when transported.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

If you are having the eggs posted then you have to leave them to settle, however if you are collecting them yourself then they can go straight under - which is what I do as I am just too impatient

Personally ... If people come to me to pick up their eggs directly from me, and transport them carefully home.... no bumpy roads or dropping them etc, then I say start incubating when you like....

If they have gone through the post then I say 24 hours :)

How much shaking around could they have had on a 10 min journey :D
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

I made sure the eggs were secure and they didn't shake around too much at all  :)

Shall I go and put them under now or wait until the morning?

bit late now PC so I would wait until the morning - what I do is place the eggs next to the broody and let her slide them underneath her - this way you know that she will accept them properly  :)
I tried bidding on some guinea fowl eggs today but got outbid - shame really as I have 3 hens gone broody  ::)

I'm sure you transported them very carefully but you have no idea if the breeder took the same care. If they said wait they may well know something you don't!  ???

I'm terrible for following my own advice as I also get very impatient but it dies seem to make a difference. Did you manage to wait till today?
