cheap bulk compost?
« on: March 06, 2012, 20:19 »
Hi

Can anyone advise me on the best place to order approximately a tonne of compost fit for growing veg?
I am in Tameside Greater Manchester.

Thanks!

While I know there are other suppliers in our (your!) area, I'd recommend Fairfield Composting - our allotment society use them, I've used them from work and their prices are competitive. Can you find other people on your site who might want some, as that will bring transport costs down

Thanks, I have actually just emailed them for a quote, before I saw your reply!
I am unfortunately not on an allotment. I am just about to build a few raised beds in my garden to add to the veg plot I already have.

thanks for the reply  :)

Have you considered topsoil instead?  Also, when it comes to filling raised beds it's surprising just how much you need. :)

find out where you local council takes your green waste as they will most likely sell it once composted, some are even free
my local one sells compost for £18 a ton if you collect

I brought 4 tonnes of compost from my local council last year and it was only £5 per tonne. It's good stuff and they delivered. Worth checking if you have the same service available.

That is a great price - it makes you think how much of a markup companies must be able to make if they are buying stuff from the council, adding a few extras and bagging it up at 3 bags for a tenner!

Fairfield replied, say 1 tonne £45 plus £25 delivery to Hyde.
Will definitely ring the council, I did look on both Stockport and Tameside council websites for info but no joy.
Just picked up a leaflet from the garden center, a company called JPR farm direct, not sure how much they charge or if they deliver to Hyde.

Our 20 mm. grade which is what most allotment-holders use is £30.00 per tonne inc. V.A.T.  Delivery to Droylsden for loads up to 1.5 tonnes (3.75 cubic metres) is £15.00 inc. V.A.T.

I don't think you'll have joy with the council - almost all Greater Manchester compostable waste goes into the GMW/Viridor system (big in-vessel composters) and I think the compost produced is all taken in big contracts.

Yes I am not far from the Viridor plant in Bredbury, got their phone number so worth a try. At least it all gets used!
