Potato rotation messed up
« on: September 08, 2009, 14:03 »
My crop rotation for next year is a bit messed up at the moment as I'm taking on a new bit of plot from my friend (the new bit had potatoes on it this year).
To get into a new rota I'll have to either put my potatoes where beans/ peas have been before or where the brassicas were.
Which one would be the better option?
Do I need to do anything to the soil (manure?)

I would, put my friend had potatoes there this year. I thought it'd be better to wait at  least a year.

Lucylike has already decided to swap the spuds to a new spot  ::)

The question is whether they would be best to follow on from legumes or brassicas.  And what soil prep is needed.

I bung in potato fertiliser when I plant my tubers but forget to do anything else.

This page contains some info on rotation but it suggests that potatoes should not follow brassicas as spuds don't like lime as a general rule.

So I would bung your spuds in the pea / bean bed  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I don't think it matters unless you've put lime in the soil when you grew your brassicas & even then you will only be likely to get scab (I mean your spuds not you  ???), but that's not a huge problem really as it peels off. I would add manure though & either chicken pellets, potato fertiliser, or Growmore or something - they're hungry beasts spuds are & the manure will help to conserve moisture for the swelling tubers.
