Can kale be sown now?
« on: August 16, 2014, 23:18 »
It is about the time of year for me to start sowing leaf greens for autumn/winter/early spring harvesting and currently have perpetual spinach, an oriental thing (Tsoi-Sim) and spring cabbage seeds. I have some residual kale seeds as well, can these also be sown now for autumn/winter greens? I've only ever sown kale in the spring.

I've sown some about 2 weeks ago when it was still quite warm but into August - they're coming along fine. For the price of a seed packet I'd say its worth a try...

They may not get very big before winter, but you may as well as they won't die overwinter and you should get some sort of crop during the spring. If your lucky we'll have another mild winter and they'll keep growing slowly over winter.

My first year ever of growing Kale.
It has been an amazing crop and very tasty.
I've grown it in the open in raised beds either side of my cabbages (that are covered) and nothing has touched them. I've also grown it around the edge of some of my other bean and veg beds. It seems very easy and hardy.

I've been using quite a bit of it as come and go pickings.

My variety is Westland Autumn Curly kale.

I started sowing it early April and have made new sowings every three weeks too.
I sowed some a few weeks back and they are strong and just gone in where my broad beans were, should be fine for late Autumn.
I sowed some mid last week and up already, so will have some for winter and spring.

What I love also is that no slugs, snails or cabbage white are attracted by them.

I wish I could agree with that, but have to net mine and use slug pellets; Also the covers have to stay on all winter or the pigeons strip them

My kale was reduced to skeleton plants by the cabbage white butterfly caterpillars last year ... when I left them uncovered having heard the same myth that they weren't attracted to kale ...  >:(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
