Mushrooms
« on: February 15, 2009, 10:05 »
Hello, I am considerin starting growing mushrooms.  Searching around on the web, tend to find a lot of " home kits" fro sale but that is all. I tried a coule of these 2 years ago -- nothing happened. Anyone recomend a good resource / method to start mushroom growing.

Anyone had much success ?

(Hey..I am talking about edible mushrooms here !! lol :D

I have had success many years ago with a kit and then two year ago with a half price one from Woolies nothing.  I saw in one of my catalogues mushroom stuff being sold that is not in a kit, if I find it I will let you know the link.

I did think about this but they seem expensive for what you get. Always look at the projected yield before you buy.... it's not much for the outlay involved IMO

My next door buddies have tried the kits without success.  I've had a go with the impregnated dowells that you have to put into logs.   I've had them in my garden for 12 months and absolutely nothing.  I've not thrown out the logs, I keep them now for the wildlife to shelter and feast on.

In my opinion, don't waste your money. :(

step dad said his mum got one once and it didn't seem to work so the emptied the thing onto the soil on the front garden - couldn't stop the things growing in the front garden for years after!  :D

Im like most on here never got mushrooms from a kit, we got some soil from a scrubby site where contractors were working when we was doing our back garden and it puts up loads of mushrooms hahahahha.  Not eaten them tho as the kids always seem to stomp them befor we get there.
Thanks
Kris

I've grown mushrooms from kit twice with no problem, although they were cossetted. The first kit yielded several crops.
This year I'm trying various spawn on well-rotted compost, so will be interesting to compare results.
Suttons sell spawn @ £4 odd, and there's usually some on eBay around the same price.
Well worth the effort, cos it's lovely to pick your own fresh mushrooms  :)
