Baytril
« on: October 20, 2010, 16:37 »
Ive just googled Baytril, and it looks as if its pretty potent stuff. On wikipedia, it says it was banned by the FDA for use with poultry in 2005.
I know that you lot use it all the time, are there any side effects I should be aware of please?

Many thanks,

Mary.

There is an egg withdrawal which will not bother Monty. I've used it on two of our hens and they recovered without any side effects that I noticed.

No side effects that I've ever noticed.  Don't eat him soon after he's been on Baytril  though  ;)

Aunt Sally, I can't believe you could think that NormandyMary would eat him just yet especially after what she's been through! I will have to report you to the moderator :tongue2:

Well just this once GrannieAnnie, if she gets out of control again I will have no other option ;)

Don't you just love the way she keeps everyone in order. It's like she's constantly looking over everyone's shoulder to see what's being typed, even at this ridiculous hour in the morning. Perhaps she is and that's a bit spooky. However I have a great cure - I just sit here with garlic draped around my neck as I know how much AuntSally loves the stuff with a passion

Baytril 10% is licenced for poultry but the 2.5% isnt...... its all to do with whether it is financially viable to relicence the product if there is an alternative that will do just as well.....

so maybe not banned but just not licenced for some strengths??
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

Just another question please folks. How many days do chooks normally have Baytril for?Monty has had them for 5 days now, and although I think there is some improvement, his foot is still hot and swollen. Everyday he has his footbath, I manage to get loads of gunk out, so it seems to be working on that front, but he still has problems standing and walking on it.
Any ideas?

Thanks again,
Mary.

It is very difficult to get the antibiotic into the infected area of the birds foot so continue with them for another session and continue cleansing it.

He may never stand and walk properly again as considerable damage can be done to the area by the infection.  :(

Thanks for your reply Aunt Sally. I have to decide whether it is in Montys best interest to subject him to more treatment. I have to decide whether Im doing it for him or ME. Its not a life for a cockerel if he cant strut his stuff and do the bizzo with the girls. Although will be very sad for me and OH, I have to do what is right for my boy. Its very easy to be selfish in a case like this, at least Ive tried to do the best I could. I think I left it a bit too late to get treatment for him as I thought he had sprained his foot jumping down from the nesting box. I'd never heard of bumblefoot then. Im much wiser now!!
