Black swirl in the egg?
« on: November 23, 2013, 14:08 »
A lady who buys my spare eggs told me that one of the eggs she cracked open had a black swirl in the egg.
The egg smelt fresh and wasn't off.

To be on the safe side she threw the egg away but wondered what it was.

Anyone know what it might be?
                     what caused it?
                      if it is harmful?

Had it been me who discovered it I might very wel have used it in a cake, I think.

Thanks. :)

Sometimes blood can get into the egg and this is what it may have been.Of course, it's impossible to say without seeing it. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

is she sure it wasn't a blood spot or even a worm - if your hen has a severe worm infestation then worms can get into the eggs :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks Joyful.

Very unlikely to be a worm as we worm them regularly and they were done a couple of weeks ago.

After speaking to her recently I think it is likely to be a blood spot or meat spot. She did say that the colour looked like dark blood rather than the black she said at first. She said the egg didn't smell bad.

It worried me at first as she said it was black. But on reflection she is in her eighties and her sight may be a little off.

I told her to put any peculiar specimens in a pot and ring me next time so I can see it for myself.

I was worried at first and now I am just intrigued.
