Cutting ideas needed
« on: May 04, 2009, 19:20 »
Right.  I'm determined to break my cutting curse, so I want to have another go.  Are geraniums a good idea to start with (I have one in particular I'd like to propagate for a friend)?  I think I understand the theory, but it always seems to go wrong!

I assume you mean Pelergoniums, then yes they are as easy as it comes.

Take a cutting at a joint of about 4 to 6 inches, take of as many leaves as possible (Leave at least two small ones on) and also clean up any lose material on the stem, do a couple more and push them into the edge of a flower pot (They seem to like contact with the side of the pot rather than being in the middle). Water well then cover with a plastic bag, leave in full light and forget them for a couple of weeks.

Rooting cuttings don't want a rich compost - dilute potting compost with grit-sand, perlite or fine bark.
Firm cuttings in well, they need close contact with compost all the way round - no air pockets

Good luck - once you've cracked it you'll be hooked
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!
