Listless hen
« on: April 12, 2009, 18:30 »
Hi everyone - Im new the forum/site, so hope Im doing this correctly!

I wonder if anyone can help - I have a Sussex Star who is around 22 weeks.  She has suddenly become very listless, is passing very watery poo, eating a little but not much, and feels very light compared to our other birds.  She has no nasal discharge, coughing or any other symptoms.  We had the same with another hen about a month ago and after about ten days (saw a vet - couldnt find anything wrong) she keeled over and died.  We didnt have this one at the time - we got her a few days later.  The rest of the flock of 8 all seem fine and are laying well.  Any ideas?

No we havent wormed them yet - the vet was pretty certain it wasnt a worm problem.

i'd be worried it's something contagious if it's the same symptoms.
(even though they didn't live together at the time: it could be something that's in the housing, or bedding ...)

was your vet a poultry specialist? if not, it might be worth seeking one out: because if it is contagious, your whole flock could be in danger.

Personally I'd try worming Flubenvet is best you can get it online and easily administered on half a grape.  Just done my regular worming, mine get watery poos and dirty bottoms, also sometimes don't lay when they need worming.
