Salmonella risk
« on: August 15, 2009, 13:41 »
Hi, We have had 4 Ex-batts now for 2 weeks.  It might be a completely school person, (to be PC), question to ask, but do I need to worry about Samonella in the girls or would thye have been treated in their previous life?
Thanks for any advice.  :)

I believe that all cage hens have been vaccinated against the relevant strains of salmonella.

Agree with Aunt Sally, sure they will have been vaccinated but have a niggle in the back of my mind that salmonella vaccine only lasts about a year and they would need a booster to remain fully immunised. Don't quote me on this, I can't remember where I saw the list of vaccinations and I might be mistaken.

That being said, none of my ducks have been vaccinated against anything and I lick out the cake bowl happily and nothing has ever happened to me! I don't worry about it and just try to keep my birds clean, healthy and happy.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I didn't know that Kate !

I mean about the vaccine, not the licking out the cake mixture - we all do that

Not sure, as I said the memory is a bit vague. Will try and investigate!
