problem potatoes
« on: June 10, 2013, 20:47 »
I have the odd potato in each row that seems to be dying off. They are all first earlies and there are 5 different varieties. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

That's very similar to what I have.

I looked it up and it could be a few things but I think it is or was frost.

Mine seem to be wilting too and there is a bit of leaf curl too.

Just out of interest , where did you get the seed potatoes from?

Mine came from T and M.

Frost, cover them with a bit of soil to protect them... they will be fine.

Doesn't look like frost damage to me but it could be one of a number of diseases brought in on infected tubers. Certified seed does not mean disease free, just that you are less likely to have problems. I've had seed potatoes from a big Scottish supplier for the last 3 years and always have the odd plant or two go down with blackleg. The first symptom is yellowing/curled leaves. Check the stems at soil level and if they are black and rotten lift the plant and burn it.

I had a lot of potatoes looking like that last year, and it invariably turned out to be blackleg. Have a look at the stem, see what you can see.

Almost certainly not frost damage, as the plants either side are completely fine, plus frost damage tends to turn black pretty much straight away.

Interesting b/c my potatoes are doing the same thing.  One could be b/c I planted it too soon in a bucket thay *may* be too small for it.  But I have one in the ground, where the others are growing happily yet this one is wilting!?!

I have a few dotted about in the rows of earlies and they look like blackleg when I had a look at the stems  :(

It's not been a good year for them has it  :(
