winter growing - is there anything I can start now?
« on: November 16, 2010, 16:35 »
I have five big raised beds, and only started gardening about 6 months ago, so have never grown anything through a winter.

Is there anything I can start now, that will survive the cold?  It makes me sad to see my raised beds mostly empty (apart from some ready-to-pull carrots, some herbs and some cabbage/broccoli that doesn't seem to be doing much).

Or should I just accept that it's too cold to do anything just now.

I've got kale on the go, that seems to be doing fairly well in a pot, but any other suggestions would be great.

Sorry, should say, I also have a load of garlic planted, but it's obviously not visible yet, so that bed is still empty looking too!

couple of suggestion would be to go for winter onions (still time)
aquadulce broadbean - probably a wee bit late... but you can always give it a miss as they always think it is a waste trying in this forum
other than that it is just mugs of tea after tea after tea...... (or whisky...) :)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

It probably works fine where Prakash lives but for those of us 'up north' it often is a waste of time.

Having said that, I've stuck a few dozen in just cos I had the seed....glutton for punishment  ???

I tried beans earlier in the year, but I only got a handful - where I live is quite exposed and I think the rubbishy summer weather (lashing rain/gales) was too much for them!

Never mind.  I'll concentrate on my non-edible plants for now, hoping to get some colour in the garden as early as possible!

I am even further north than you but, when this wind and rain has died down a bit, I will throw in a few broad bean seeds left from last year to see what happens.
I did that about the same time last year and got a crop from them although the spring-sown ones did better.
What I did notice, though, was that the spring-sown ones got "chocolate spots" on the leaves whereas the close-by autumn-sown beans were clear of imperfections. Luck of the draw, I guess.
If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!
