weed killers

Could someone tell me of the best weedkiller that can be used on my plot that does not stay in the soil and only kills the weeds.

This is an often asked question that can lead to major disagreements on the forums especially over certain major companies.

As we wish to avoid a repeat of this may I suggest you do a forum search on "glyphosate" and "Roundup", also have a look on the internet. You can then make your own decision!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Glyphosate is about the only product you can get which is suitable. It is also the major chemical in Roundup. Go to your local Wilko`s and buy a bottle of Glyphosate which is a much cheaper option than Roundup. :D

I have never had a need for any weedkiller. Regular use of the hoe will do the trick and you can put the weeds on the compost heap.

Not with the likes of Docks, Nettles and Buttercups, you don`t.  :D

If this is a new plot you'll obviously have to treat it differently to one that's been cultivated.

A hoe isn't going to be much use against perennial weeds three feet tall so spray it all with glyphosate as per makers instructions.

Next year you might be able to manage with the hoe

I find the best solution for the big weeds is to take the garden fork and wedge them out. I do this every spring prior to cultivating my soil and it really does make a difference. I usually only have some bindweed left, which I crop close to the growing point, spray up close with glyphosphate solution, which usually sets the weed back considerably. This way I don't have to spray the entire area and wait a few weeks for it to work.

Sorry DD if you think I was being underhand - I was posting after 2 further posts after yours so hadn't appreciated that the thread was effectively closed. I was only trying to pick up a point in the original post that didn't appear to have been covered - that the poster was after a selective weedkiller which Glyphosate isn't....

I'll try to let dead threads lie in future!
