Cracked Apples !
« on: June 29, 2007, 16:38 »
Earlier this year I planted a Discovery and James Grieve ( M26 ? ) and both have done well and are about 4/5ft. However the little apples on the Discovery all have circular cracks - mainly around the stalk. The JG is fine. I think it may be due to the billion gallons of rain we have had but wondered if it may be a disease. Also, I think I read somewhere that you shouldn't let them fruit in the first year - is that right ?

I thank you for any forthcoming wisdom !

Your probably right dry weather followed by rain and more rain and .... well you get the picture, the skins toughen a little in the dry weather and then can't cope with the sudden swelling.

And yes as a general rule it's advisable not to let fruit trees fruit in their first year, helps them to get a good start, roots etc without concentrating on fruiting.
