IMHO the more sun the merrier.

Agreed, most veg prefer full sun.

But maybe with a little shady spot for later sowings of salad crops....

I have two spots I am growing vege in and yesterday was very sad and made a chart of the shade/sun each gets at hourly intervals during the day. (actually amazing that the sun shone at those hourly points really!!). It was quite illuminating though and I am glad I did it, however sad it makes me (!) because it made me realise it is not just fixed things, like sheds and houses etc, that through shadow.  I am growing raspberries in what I thought would be full sun but in fact is in shade most of the day because I am growing peas next to them and they are casting a shadow over them.  So when planning your beds, bear in mind the height of the crops you are growing as well as fixtures like houses and sheds.  It's not too drastic this year as it's their first year in the ground but next year will be crowing something a whole lot shorter there!

Full sun is best but why not do both?   Part-shade is great for some crops - lettuce, beetroot, chard, hamburg parsley even comfrey.

Thanks for all the responses guys i would love to do both but sadly i do have to let my children have some garden to play in

I might get away with pots of things in their play area but not a full patch lol

Kind regards Nicky

My children prefer to play in the shade anyway they say it's to hot in the summer and I think  they are right,

You can create shade for your salads pretty easy by growing some taller plants in front of them eg, peas runner beans etc
