Cabbage Recommendation
« on: April 27, 2020, 20:23 »
Hi, please can anyone recommend a savoy type cabbage that doesn't get too big. There's just the two of us here.
More than one recommendation would be even better as I am finding to tricky to get any seeds at the moment. My parsnips will be very late this year  :D

Also advice when to sow seeds to get a winter crop would be appreciated.

Thanks

Elaine

There are others here who will suggest varieties, but my tip is to plant out at a closer spacing than recommended. The increased competiton between plants for nutrients will naturally result in smaller heads. I do this with a lot of my brassicas as I aim for decent meals rather than prize winners :)

Ah good point Plot 1, just buy whatever I can find and plant closer together wasn’t something I had considered thank you.

Plot 1 is right when he advises to plant closer together to limit the size of the cabbage.  However I have found a good savoy cabbage that is quite hardy and doesn't get too big is Ormskirk.  It stands quite well in winter so is quite long lasting.
