Mr Fox called again today.
« on: May 28, 2011, 20:48 »
I just cant believe how unlucky we have been with our chooks lately. Today, we lost our new cockerel Jethro. Luckily, all the girls escaped unscathed. There was hardly a mark on Jethro when we found him, so I think it could have just been shock. Such a shame. The girls, 4 of which were bought at the same time, have lost their direction. Miss Red, our remaining chook from before, is sort of helping them but I know they miss their boyfriend. I will miss the crowing. He had just got it down to a fine art.
RIP Jethro, now happy in Chook Heaven.

So sorry :( poor Jethro
He is crowing along with our turkey in chicken heaven.  I do not like fox hunting, bit if a fox got one of my hens I think I would want to shoot it (fox)
 So sorry

So sorry to hear about Jethro, Mary  :(
You do seem to have been through a run of bad luck with your chooks.  Good luck with your remaining girls and I hope they are not too shocked.  Are you going to get another cockerel or leave it for a while?

Thanks all for your kind words. If any good has come from Jethro's demise, its that Miss Red who was being attacked by Jethro (she was my one remaining older bird) has now taken over as "The Boss". She is now back in the run with the girls. Im not letting them free range over the fields for their own safety.
Oh nearly forgot...I got my first egg from one of the new girls this morning, it was laid in the middle of the run, so she either got caught short, or Miss Red wouldnt let her into the henhouse to lay it. Im betting on the second option as I saw her keeping guard in the doorway, not letting anyone in..little madam!!
