How to prevent illness
« on: January 11, 2009, 16:38 »
After one of my hens died suddenly last night have spent the day disinfecting the coop with Jeyes.
Was wondering if  I could add anything preventative or a supplement to the other girls water or food in case they too become ill. Have had a look on various web sites but it seems a bit of a minefield.
I don't however know what she died of as it all happened very quick.

Thanks,

Geri

the best way to prevent illness is really good husbandry, a balanced diet, being very very careful where new stock is sourced (avoid auctions and always have a look around a poultry breeders stock( and lastly reducing any stress challenges on the birds. :D

And bear in mind that they hide their symptoms if they can. Any sign of weakness makes them a potential target for the rest of the flock so they feign health sometimes.

And however careful you are, they can still come a cropper, so don't feel too bad about it. :)

Hi Geri

Sometimes no matter how well we look after our birds one will just turn its toes up. It is not any reflection on you - don't beat yourself ip
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

You can be 100% on top of everything and your chickens will up and die. That just the way of things.
