Dock Leaves!!
« on: March 13, 2008, 17:13 »
Does anyone now how to get rid of dock leaves over than digging the * out. They are so deep rooted in my allotment...I just had a session today taking some out and was wondering if there is a herbicide or decent weed killer that is good for zapping them. I would prefer an organic method?!?

Also if you have anyways of getting rid of what i call 'Whicking grass' please let me know. Its the grass that pops up everywhere in my plot and is like spagetti under the ground!

cheers

I think your talking about Couch grass, sorry but heres the bad news.........

if you want to be organic the best and probably only sure way is to dig it out :(  But even then your unlikely to get it all :(  I had it all over my plot, you have to get out all the roots as every single bit will send out shoots, breaking it up is the worst thing you can do.

Don't know much about dock leaves sorry :?

Roundup is probably the  best weedkiller that's available to the public at the mo IMO, it's not organic but it does work couch grass usually needs 2 treatments and docks probably will too.
Its ok around kids and animals once its dry and any of it that falls on the soil deteriorates rapidly, but be careful when spraying it will kill anything green it lands on, like your neighbours cabbages if it drifts.

you can isolate couch grass by trenching the area as it spreads horizontally only 3 to 6 inches underground, so if you dig a trench 12 inches down it will not spread beyond that point.

To rid your plot of couch grass scatter tunip seed all over and around it.  This will cause it to slowly die back. It will be all gone by the end of the season.

You can clear the area you need to plant now by hand or even roundup etc. and the outer areas plant with the turnips. You can also scatter tom seeds they will also help to clear the area.  It an old trick that works.

Damn couch grass, new lotties covered in it, decided to hand dig a third and nuke the rest with roundup. Had to go over it 3 times with me right angled fork to try to get rid of every scrap I can find.
