Dock Weed
« on: June 06, 2011, 10:11 »
Recently I have been having an "infestation" of Dock weed on the 'lotment, and their roots are turning out to be * to get out! Brute force and ignorance seems to be working but is there any other ways to remove them easier?
It can't rain all the time.

but make sure you deal with them before they set seed as the seeds have been known to start growing even after eight years of being stored  :(.
Staffies are softer than you think.

My new plot last year was covered in these, and it is still an ongoing process to get rid of them.  The places that I have dug them out including roots are certainly clearer this year than last.  It really is a matter of keeping on top of them and not allowing them to go to seed.

Thanks for the responses! I'm reluctant to use Glyphosate at the moment but I may have to! I received my plot this year and they seem to be sprouting up all over the place.

They are great survivors and have this clever trick of snapping off at soil level if you try to pull them up, leaving the root intact. I found to my cost that just a scrap of root seems to allow them to regrow.

If you are wanting to avoid chemicals you could "paint" the glyphosphate onto the leaves and avoid a general spray which should reduce the amount that finds its way into your soil.

thanks bigben, my main problem with using it was the proximity to the blackberry bushes that were there when I received the plot, they are growing within 20cm of them!
By "painting" it on I am guessing it will not affect the bushes?

If you paint it on there will be no spray drift so the brambles will be fine.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
