Pregnancy & Chickens
« on: August 12, 2010, 13:26 »
My wife rang me today as some one told her at her work
that having chickens while she is pregnant is a real bad idea
and went on to say kids as young as 5 should not be around chickens
Iv done some google research and not found that much
mainly cats poo
n lambs seem to be the main dangers

my wife is 19 weeks pregas
our 2 birds have free roam of the garden n our dog snacks on the poo
yep disgusting i know! but snaffels it up when hes let out for a pee or poo himself
I dont want to confine our girls

Any known facts welcome
cheers

Good hygiene is always a good idea whether pregnant or not.  I can't think of any problem that your two hens could cause your wife.

There is far more danger from cats and dogs and as you say sheep than from chickens.

Never heard of anything which chickens carry which could be a danger to children or pregnant mums to be.  Why doesn't your wife as whoever made the comment what the supposed danger was as that would make finding info much easier.

hiya!

i have just had a little boy 7 weeks ago and wasnt told of any issues of chicken keeping and being pregnant.

i did all the usual stuff with my girls and have not had any problems.  ours have free range of the garden too.

i would agree about hand hygiene being important so maybe use an additional anti bac hand wash if you are concerned

sorry for the lack of caps but am typing 1 handed due to it being feed time!!

there is some evidence that pregnant women can be more susceptible to disease than others, for example in flu pandemics pregnant women are disproportionately affected.  Hand hygiene is the key to preventing problems.  Soap and water is fine, but hands must be washed for two minutes (including wrists if it is to be effective) and drying well is just as important.  Health professionals often err on the side of caution (then they cant be sued)
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

Hi,

Just had my second baby :). I checked with the midwife on becoming pregnant this time and she said chickens are fine. Whenever I take my toddler into the chicken pen we always go and wash our hands afterwards.

The majority of chickens carry campilobacter which causes sickness and diarrohea. My sister has just done a phd on it and studied the way that chickens are kept and they seem to be much less likely to carry it as they get older and if they are free range! There is a surprise! My chickens starred in her research!! Tee hee I think it helps if you clean them out really often aswell.

Try as you might you can not keep little ones from playing with everything they shouldn't and I am quite sure my daughter is more likely to catch something from playing with the toilet brush than from my chickens.

thank you all for your response
it has put our minds at ease
as we are new to chuk keeping 3 eggs in  :D
we were concerned by this scare mongering by her work college
I think he told her like it was fact
but i think its more old wifes tales by the sound of it.

my quest for more cucks hes been halted for now any ways

When baby arrives you will be really busy for first few weeks!

I am looking forward to when I next need hens as I think my two year old will appreciate seeing eggs hatch and baby chickens growing up.

I am thinking of giving that a try for the first time.

p.s people always try to tell you how to bring up your first baby - trust yourself and just go with what you think is best!
