Rotation
« on: June 27, 2009, 20:27 »
I know when you grow a type of crop it is advised that the next year you grow another type. What if say you are growing peas, they die off and then you plant cabbages the same year, does that mean you can grow peas in the same spot again the next season ?

Does it matter how many different types of crop you crow in one spot in a season ?

John has a very good information page on this site all about crop rotation.  Do have a read:

I'd say no, you grew it there, dont grow it there again, even if, or especialy if, it failed.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

I don't mean it died off because of failure, I mean when they die off at the end of their natural life.

I am also a bit confused by the 'overlap' when things finish in one growing season and you could start something else off there. I was wondering whether it was right to put my leek babies into the space vacated by onions as that is the current allium bed but wont be next year if that makes sense. Crikey have comfused myself.

I'm wondering about doing exactly the same thing with my leeks...but I have a feeling the answer is generally no, don't follow one crop with another of the same type.  Which is a shame as the only other space for my leeks is where my potatoes are and I'd quite like them to stay in the nice cool ground for as long as possible as I've never managed to store them well.
