Gardeners Delight Tomato
« on: May 26, 2009, 19:37 »
Hi all,

Someone has given me 3 x Gardeners Delight Tomato so i have planted them in a growbag that i had and i put them inside my tomato greenhouse thing i have, Was searching around the forum here and a few people say pinch off the side shoots. Does this mean pinch off the ones at the bottom near the soil

yep. If you were the tomato - standing on your head pinch out anything that would be growing out of your arm pits.  :D

Pinch out any shoots in the leaf axils, including those low down. You can root the bigger ones in water and then lant them up, to get more plants for free (Thanks for this tip DD :D - I've several on the go now  :))

Yes the leaf axil is where the leaf joins the main stem  :)

Also do i need to use a feed for the plants in the growbag as i am on a low budget you see and i have plenty of Fish, Blood and Bone left over from the plot. Can i use this or does it need to be a food spray etc

I think video is useful for folk new to removing side shoots from Tomatoes:

http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-prune-tomatoes

also I recommend that you don't remove anything UNLESS there is a flower "truss" ABOVE it.  That will prevent you removing the growing point by mistake!

You don't need to feed tomatoes until the fruit is just starting to appear.  Then they'll need a feed that is high in potash (good for producing fruit).  I would have thought that fish blood and bone would have too much nitrogen (good for producing leaves) and not enough potash, so you'd get healthy, leafy plants but not as much fruit.

FBB may be better than nothing, as the tomatoes will use up the nutrients in the growbags eventually - anyone on here know?

On the other hand, tomato food will be around 3-4 pounds for enough for this year and probably next as well, and if that's within your budget it's probably the best bet.
