chilli plants at 15cm
« on: May 26, 2009, 22:22 »
My chilli plants are now 15cm tall and I was wondering what size pots they need to be in. I'm worried that 10cm pots are too small. They've been potted for over two months now and they don't seem to be anywhere near flowering.

I think it depends!

I have some chilli varieties that are 24" tall, and in 7" pots, whereas my Demon Red are probably 6" tall at most and are in 4.5" or 5" pots I think.

I would look and see how developed the root system is.  Place your hand, palm downwards, over, the top of the pot with the plant between your fingers.

Turn upside down and sharply knock the lip of the pot (now facing downwards) on the edge of a table or somesuch, so that the plant drops into your hand.  Lift the pot off, see how developed the roots are, and replace the pot and turn back the right way up.

If the roots are well developed around the outside of the root ball then pot on into a pot 2" more in diameter (some say 1" but I find it too fiddly to try to pot on 1" at a time!)

Repeat as necessary!

Well, my Demon Red are going to be 12" tall max.  I think they would be a bit lost in a 10" or 12" pot  ;)

It would help to know what variety Canwickplot is growing I think.

My peppers were sweet nardello and ring of fire. I checked the roots this morning and they don't seem to be stressing at all. I can't work it out, I just don't think they've made any progress over the last couple of weeks.

I have a couple of seedlings, i sowed them late...i know, but apart from opening their seed leaves they are sitting there doing nothing :( I'll just leave them to get on with it and see what happens  maybe a bit more warm weather will help.................'live in hope...........' you know the rest
