what can i plant now?
« on: March 08, 2009, 18:25 »
I'm determined to get a bumper crop this year, so i'm here asking advise.
A couple of years ago i did well, growing carrots parsnip, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes and a few other bits and bobs. Last year my hens ripped everything up!!!!

This year im prepared, hens now have a run so my veggies will be protected, i've cleaned the greenhouse out, now i just need to know what i can grow.
Please help im eager to get going right away, ive even been dreaming about it!
Louise x :)

Hi Louise

I am in Lancashire as well and next week I will be planting onion and shallot sets outside, plus some carrot seed.  Will also be starting off some cabbage and sprouts indoors, already got a few cauliflowers on the go in the kitchen (only 2 inches high).  The following week, peas and broad beans outdoors.  Planted peas etc earlier in March last year, but they did nothing, still too cold I think, so waiting a little longer this year.

Thank you Wombat, i have some onion sets and carrot seeds so i'll get them in next weekend. I had 2 tonnes of topsoil delivered this weekend to fill my raised beds so i can put them straight in there.

Hello Louise,
I've planted some white and red onions today, I have new raised beds also.
This is the first crop of anything I've planted in the allotment (which I took over in November).

It's been hard work over the Winter, so here's hoping we both have a bit of luck with our crops...

You could plant some broad beans if you like those.  Can go directly into the ground at this time of year or start off indoors if pigeons or mice are a problem.
