vegetable planter troughs
« on: May 16, 2013, 23:06 »
I just made a vegetable planter trough today to get some extra growing space and plan to grow lettuce and other salad crops. It's quite deep as it is a V shape trough.

Any ideas or experience from others as to what is good to grow in these troughs would be appreciated.

Either grow shallow-rooted plants across all of it or deeper rooted plants down the middle (the V shape means the soil will be rather shallow towards the edges.)

It would probably suit many herbs if you don't already have a herb bed/pot.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Hi. I took a photo, but not sure how to make it small enough to post (needs to be under 128kb). Mine is 2MB! I'll have to wait until my techno son gets in to ask him how to do it.

Have herbs already, so probably go with salad (lettuce; spring onions, etc). It's not that big. About 3ft x 3ft x 18 inches deep.

I'm growing lettuce, radish, beetroot, round carrots, spring onions in mine,I might also sow some mangetout.
Have a look on home page of the forums how to post photo's. I use pixsizer to resize. I email myself from my phone,I'm sure there is probably a quicker way. In fact I took pics of my planters the other day,I'll post it now all being well.

Well here goes. I hope this works! Mine is a made from reclaimed decking wood, so no cost apart from some screws. I put some fleece inside to help retail the soil from fall through any gaps. Not as neat and posh as Snowdrops, but should do the job.

I love all the different pieces of wood!

Looks great to me, and it was free, so even better!
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Your planters look great heygrow, my hubby's a chippie by trade so they ought to be good  Thing is whatever they are made from or how if compost etc & conditions are right whatever we plant will grow. Good luck with yours. I've already had a harvest, albeit very small of some micro leaves, actually I was thinning out the salad leaves & beetroot
