Last Years Leeks
« on: March 11, 2012, 13:38 »
I sowed a row of leeks last year in my cold frame, however the soil wasn't great, and they hardly came up at all - in fact, they were there so long, that the label washed off, and I forgot what they were.  They looked a little bit like weedy spring onions.

Anyway, I left them there, and roll forward to this year, and they look like quite healthy, but small, leeks (which is obviously what they are!)  They are a bit bigger than the spring onions you see in the shops.

So, my question is, can I transplant them for growing on this year?  They are almost a year old - will they come to anyting, or are they just going to bolt?

Cheers in advance

They will bolt now it's their 2nd year. Eat them now as leeks or spring onions, they're quite nice in salads  ;)

Sorry, but I think they are certain to bolt, and probably sooner rather than later.  :(
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Mr Pedant here.

"Bolting" is the premature running to seed of a plant. These will do it as part of their normal cycle.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If they go to seed, it will be premature (for me!)

I have 2 beds of leeks that sound just like yours, they are getting picked by the bucket full, then used as 'baby' leeks, either in leek n tater soup, or whole in a cheese sauce, yumm. I would pick and eat them, my daughter thought ours were spring onions. the really thick ones get to finger thick.

I am eating loads of last year's leeks too. They are lovely whether be fat or thin  :)  They are great in soup, casseroles and the thin ones I like just wilted a bit in boiling water and then onto the hot griddle pan  :)

I think leek and potato soup is very under-rated. At its most basic it's fab but with the addition of bay leaves, bit of cream and white wine, it's up there with the greats  :)
