broody with chicks
« on: July 26, 2011, 11:52 »
One of  the chicks - Light Sussex - was very unwell this morning and died in my hands.  She didn't have energy to lift her head and was gasping.  Poor little thing to have such a short life  :(

My broody is actually looking after the other chicks well but she has not gone out of the coop yet into the run.  I am a little worried because I am wondering if she is still in broody mode rather than mother hen mode.  She is making the food noises and showing the chicks the feeder and drinker but just not moving very far.  Am I being over anxious now?
11 bantams (and counting!) 2 dogs 1 cat

Bantam

Is this your first hatch as i was just as worried over mine... all the support on here pointed to the same thing and that was just leave the hen , she will make sure they all feed and drink.
However having said that i was a wreck for about the first 3 days

I trust one of the more experianced keepers will give better advice but i wouldnt worry at this point
3 girls .............very addictive these girls are becoming

how many days is it since they hatched? Mine don't tend to venture out for several days (anywhere up to 4) and I keep food an water close by for her during this period. After this I move it into their run so she gets up and does her stuff (poohs etc).
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks guys  :)
She came out this afternoon with her three chicks  :D.  I have hatched eggs out but this time I was unsure bacause I didn't hatch the eggs out but put just hatched chicks under the broody.
Well I can relax a little now and let mother broody do her job.  She seems to be very good at it.
