Wilted Potatoes
« on: May 12, 2010, 21:35 »
Hi

I'm a complete veg growing virgin and I know to you experts that this probably sounds like a really stupid question, but I have covered and earthed up my potatoes and they were growing like an absolute dream and bang tonight they look all wilted.  Im absolutely gutted.  I have earthed them even more tonight as well as the fleece.  Is it the frost that has done it and they will they bounce back and have I lost the crop?

Thanks for reading and sorry for sounding stupid.

Hard to know for sure.  It sounds like you did everything possible.  But, as the change was sudden I would suspect frost damage.  I had a couple that were frost damaged and are now growing back.  They are ok but well behind the others.

I buried mine 10+ inch deep which i regreted for ages until they finsally showd there noses, they have come through a lot later than everyone else but the seem to have all missed the frosts, well know that the first green shoots have been earthed up that is.

Sounds like frost. Keep them covered for a couple of weeks if you can and they will probably recover from the damage already done.

Thanks for all your help, I've kept them fleeced and look like they have recovered, so fingers crossed that they are alright. Thanks again.

I have a few spuds looking the same - One of the old boys on the ploy have told me it is a bit of frost that have got them.

I was told to earth them up and leave them as they will recover quite quickly and will be fine.
