Horseradish
« on: May 02, 2013, 14:49 »
Hi, i love horseradish and want to grow my own, couple of questions; how easy is it to grow? are there better varieties than others and finally, best positioning, thanks  :)
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how i keep from going under......

It loves full sun but will tolerate some shade. Beware! It goes rampant if you don't keep and close watch on it.

Its like mint  but if you put it in a pot make sure it's a deep one for the roots to grow.

it would need to be in the deepest biggest container you can find - a dustbin?

There used to be a post on here with SCARY pictures of a plot that had been rotovated with horseradih on it...the infestation was so bad afterwards that the guy struggled for a few years then gave up.

Personally I would just find some growing in the countryside and help myself to a bit now and then - with landowner's permission of course. We have lots of bits of urban countryside round Manchester with horseradish growing wild...

I'm going to give it a go this year but I will be trying it out in an old butler sink that I have on the plot.  I did hear on one of the cookery programmes that if you plant some Horseradish in Leeds it will be coming up in London

We've got it growing all over our site - I think a bit managed to get away from its owner once!  :D
That and volunteer potatoes were the first things I learned to recognise last year...

I'm echoing the dustbin advice - and move the bin regularly or wrap the bottom in weed membrane so it can't root out of the drainage holes!

Ours is planted well away from any ground likely to be dug on the plot, right in the corner between the gate and the compost bins

I defy it to escape

Harrumph.

My third attempt at horseradish, and failing.  In moist soil, in full sun in a full size buried dustbin.  (bit pointless)

Planted 5 good thick thongs 3 years ago.  2 years ago down to three pencil thickness thongs.  This year, only one is growing.    Harvest? What harvest?

Anyone want their horseradish killed off?  I will just come and look at it for you.  :tongue2:
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.
