Any Cure For a Bent Tap Root?
« on: April 15, 2009, 15:51 »
I have been experimenting this year with pre-germinating Parsnip seed (very successfully) and planting in loo rolls, but due to a lack of time, the tap root on a few have been allowed to hit the bottom and have started to grow at right angles.

I know that these will probably now grow on OK but leave a funny shaped root.  Is there any remedy for this, or should I discard these? I dont really want to lose any as it's our households favourite veg.

I use kitchen towel tubes for the extra length 3 seeds to a tube and normally all three grow.  The two weakest plants are taken out and planted close together in a 'reserve team' bed and although they would be laughed at on the show table they are perfectly good for soups, mashed parsnip etc.
Some do grow into proper parsnips so the wonky ones are worth keeping.
