this might sound like a daft question but ive never tried to grow or eat turnips before but was given some to try, they are just about ready to go out now i know they are brasicas but what i wanted to know is are they like onions ie one turnip per plant or like spuds lots of turnips per plant? thanks massa

i dont know what type these are they seem to be doing really well though, they have been ready to go out for over a week i just havent got anywhere ready for them yet!

I would normaly grow turnip direct sown rather than trays, they are pretty hardy plants and will grow like raddish, pretty fast, so start eating them young (about golf ball size) rather than waiting for them to reach tennis ball size.

I do the same as Aidy - they grow quite quickly. I usually sow Milan pink top or some such.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I find its usually better to sow turnips direct,the tricky bit when done this way is thinning them out,you can sometimes pull up more than one,leaving a gap,I tried sowing in pots, but they did nt take that kindly to this method and only formed small bulbs

Sowed snowball in modules and just about ready to go out - didnt want to risk the seeds or seedlings getting frosted sowing direct over Easter. For us its all about the turnip and carrot mash!! Yum!
