I would think it would come from the seed/berry rather that the growth. But i am happy to be wrong.
Thanks

Hawthorn seed may have to go through a birds digestive system to get it started properly.

Not a fact, just a semi-educated guess. :D

My hazy memory says propagating from cutting is so difficult it's hardly worth the bother, and getting any success from the berry is hard work, which begs the question how did the ancient hedgerow boys do so well in producing mile after mile of Hawthorn hedge? I have no answer but do have lots of curiosity?

I think the seeds will germinate....but only when they are good and ready, and it won't all be at the same time....that's not how nature works. it's only our highly bred veg and flowers that have been made to do that.

i didn't expect all to germinate but hoped for more than two. i have sown them in a larger bed now yet, with all the weeds coming up, i'll be hard-pressed to identify a hawthorn seedling i think.

The seed needs to be stratified.  See www.communitytreetrust.co.uk/docs/Hawthorn.pdf

I remember seeing hawthorn stems in milk bottles as a kid, woody stems with a heal on. Left in water they soon develop roots and can be planted.

I`d be inclined to layer a few low branches if possible. :D

Hawthorn is usually propegated from seed. What you have done is right and I am sure if you just leave them more will come.

Unless the mice have stolen them.

I have several hawthorn hedges and this year have masses of seedlings appearing! I do think that you can layer them too.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
