oregano
« on: September 03, 2009, 17:56 »
I use loads of oregano.  So much it would save money to grow my own.  What is this like to grow.  Easy.  Goes mental, takes over garden.  Use fresh or dry first.  I also grow dill and Chervil and Basil (different flavours of basil), going by this any others that I might like.  I hate sage.

Thanks
Sheila

I grow loads of it.  It's a perennial that grows in clumps and doesn't take over the garden.  As It's a mediterranean plant It likes full sun and a well drained soil.  I would always use fresh over dried, but the dried stuff is lovely too.

What about rosemary?
Cheese makes everything better.

Oregano is dead easy.

Find an empty bed.

Sow a packet.

Put slug pellets down.

Walk away.

As long as the slugs don't get it, you'll have oregano all year round. Looks a bit scraggy in the winter and you need to chop it back regularly but that's it.

Think I'll do it in a pot, but hey didn't even occur to me you can grow it from seed, I was thinking of buying a plant from garden centre.  Tsk! stupid girl me that is not you LOL.

Sounds good to me.  Thanks Ice already growing rosemary forgot about the poor little plant.  Infact think I will go and pick some now to put on me roast tats.

Just looked up the seeds seems to be a choice one saying only get greek as others inferior.  Any opinions on that.

Oh already have garlic chives as well, was surprised how garlicky they are.

What about rosemary?

I have tried for years, all times of the year, to grow from cuttings :( Unsuccessfully :(  This year my only large Rosemary is dying back fast.... ~And there~ in a crack in my patio is a little self seeded plant    I have transplanted it into a nursery bed and it is thriving :D  I am a happy bunny :D :D

Both my large rosemarys died but I shoved a small piece in a pot and thats growing as well, in a sheltered corner.  Don't think the big ones liked the sea air or the pine needle laden soil they were in, courtesy of the enormous Scots Pine outside the house, .
