Netted Peas
« on: May 27, 2009, 20:55 »
Hopefully this not to dumb a question  you could help me with  :)

My Early Onward peas have now starting flowering . All there life they have been netted against the Rabbits and pigeons round here.

So my possible dumb question is do they need to be left unnetted to polinate.

Hopefully the wildlife will leave them alone

Cheers MW.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

PEAS ARE SELF-POLLINATING!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

PEAS ARE SELF-POLLINATING!

I agree with this but want to know is it necessary to keep peas netted throughout?

I've grown them for the first time... I covered them with netting just in case but soon the peas are going to grow into the netting and tangle up in it.  ::) What a mess that will be when I come to harvest or try to re-use the net.

What do others do net or not?

I have found it neccesary to keep my peas netted all the time this year. A lot depends on your local wildlife population.

In previous year I had to net twice during the season, firstly until they were about 4" high then again after the pods had formed as the pigeons were squashing the foliage down to make landing pads.

I took the nets off this year at the same time as usual, went on hols and came back to find them practically stripped. I've totally enclosed them now adn thankfully they seem to be making a full recovery.

You should not have a problem with peas getting tangled in the nets of the peas are well supported and the nets supported in their own right about 6" away from the crop.

I don't know how well this will show it....
