Has anyone used home made rooting hormone with success? Any comparisons to the shop brands?

I am hoping to give it a go this year with herbs and shrubs.

Apparently you should keep the lengths upright in water (about 4-6 " lengths) because the sap moves down - haven't tried it, but then I tend to root just in compost. Some works, some doesn't, but in my experience, if its meant to, it will...
