Passiflora Edulis (Passion Fruit)
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:58 »
On my travels the past few months in South America, while I was in Brazil I came across these really big passion fruits, they are as big as your hand or about the size of a large cooking apple

They are really good, with a yellow skin and very juicy

Now what I want to know has anyone grown thenm in the Uk and if so what requirements do I need to cultivate them here ?

I have a conservatory that I use to grow most things with mixed success

If anyone has successfully grown them to fruiting, could let me know, it would really be appreciated ;)
It's all about the journey, not the destination

RHS don't cover it in any detail as it's a tropical plant ... good luck!

Wikip... has an article on it too:

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Ah, there are 3 varieties of this and it seems I have got the hardest one to propogate, both seeds and plants

Well all is not lost I have nopt got the easiest variety (and the one I originally wanted) Passiflora Mollissima

These seeds cost me more than a kilo of the fruit  :( :(, so they better be good

If that's the one you have - there's some interesting info on P mollissima here ( assuming of course that you haven't already seen it  ::) )

Thanks, I had done a google for them and that is how I found this species, and yes I did read that page, but thank you all the same

I never knew this was actually classed as a weed  :( and goes everywhere

There should be a battle royale in my garden between this and my Jasmin  :)

But at least I can eat the fruit from the passion flower and smell the jasmin  :) :) :)

Maybe I should keep it in a flower pot  ;)
