How time consuming is growing your own veg?
« on: January 26, 2008, 15:06 »
Hi there, as you may know I am doing a design project based around growing vegetables. I will hopefully develop a product that will encourage people that like the idea of growing their own vegetables but haven't made the steps to start doing so for what ever reasons.

What would you say are the biggest inconveniences of growing you own?

Is growing your own veg quite time consuming?

If grown in containers how often do they need watering?

Thanks

Craig

Too much rain at the wrong time

Depends on how much you grow and whether you grow in your garden or have a long trip to the allotment

When they dry out!

And how long is a piece of string?  Sorry Craig, but that is a question where there are too many answers!!  or a question that's too general to anser properly!  so what are you going to produce then?

Not necessarily BUT beware; it can take over your life to where other things seem time consuming!

I will be collaborating with a major UK garden equipment manufacturer on this project . At the moment I am just trying to define the target audience for such a product. Obviously it is not aimed at those already in the know. It would be something that would encourage and make it more accessible for those who don't grow their own already. Can you see where I am coming from?

What about a questionnaire that you could give to a school or 2 to give to the parents and get their input.  Find out who grows their own, who'd like to but doesn't know how, that sort of thing?

Like WG. said, it can take over your life.  You spend half the winter waiting for spring to come so you can start sowing again, and the rest of the winter working out which seeds to buy!!!!

Very hard to put an amount of time per day, when things are growing, I'll just take me greenhouse for starters.

During sowing season, daily check for germination, ensure compost is moist, rotate the seed trays so optimum light received by all, later on prick out and pot on.

Once potted on, there is nipping out the sideshoots of tomatoes, looking for bugs, staking.

Once they're producing it's a water in the evening, measuring out the feed, again looking for any dying leaves/stalks and removing.

Thing is, I don't tend to hurry as I like pottering and watching things grow, but on average, if I got a wiggle on 15-20 mins a day, on the basis you have all the equipment to hand (but I'm there for more than an hour).

To put it another way, I've not watched Coronation St for over a year.

Time consuming, I have never thought of much growing that way, as I enjoy.

The inconvinience mostly is, when you can't get to your garden, when you should.

What fruit and veg needs to be potted indoors first then?

Can some fruit and veg be directly put into containers outdoors?

Yes I will be doing a survey at a few local schools and maybe some health food shops aswell.

yes, but bananas are most famous for providing good nutrition

Go to Wysiwiggy/ planting-transplanting, month by month guide on home page and Glossary in Welcome Forum, they will give you some idea. :)

That is just so true, like when starting to think that you are too busy growing to even go on holiday it's time to slow down and relax bit.
