Butternut squash

Hi
In my excitement of sowing my tomato seeds I threw in a couple of butternut squash seeds. These have now germinated and are growing well on the window sill. There was no clue of when to plant them on the seed packet but I gather its a too early. Will they survive until june (on my window sill) when they can be planted out or should I give up on them and start over later?

Hi ness,
I think you were a bit ahead of the starters gun! Normally I sow squash/pumpkins around the end of April or early May. They are quick growing & also hate the cold so you may well have a problem with the one`s you have sown already. Do not be tempted to put them out in a cold frame or greenhouse as they will just keel over. If you can keep them somewhere not too cool with decent light they may be ok but personally I would scrap them & start again a bit later.

They will survive, but shall need hell of a lot of space for them by then.

I grew a couple last year and once they get going they grow like triffids. It's deffo too early IMO.

Thanks for your replies - I thought that was the case. But I may have to keep one going as an experiment plus I hate killing plants, it seems such a waste.
If you don't hear from me in a few months the triffids have got me!

I had from about 10 BS plants.. ZERO NADA NOTHING NONE AARRGGHH NO fruit.. well I did in oct when the frosts killed my baby 1inch fruit!!!!

You've either got it or you havn't naaaa na na na na. Actually, only got two full sized fruits all the rest rotted due to the deluge. But the plant itself was huuuge.

Try a different variety, SG, it was a hm year, but they should be prolific like corquettes a bit.

yeah just found the packet from last year and they were wilko specials, will try a different type this time around...
