How deep?
« on: March 19, 2009, 19:50 »
Hi there everyone,

First of all I'll apologise for only appearing on here to ask questions and provide no input but it is my first year of attempting to grow my own veggies and don't feel I can offer advice to anyone.

I have today bought a packet each of cauliflower seeds, brocili seeds and cabbage seeds.  Typical Bulgarian instructions give me very specific dates for setting, re-planting and harvesting (to the day!!!) but nothing as regards how deep to set the seeds.

I've chosen a variety of cauliflower which states the heads will be well covered by leaves to protect from the sunlight as, so I've heard from other Brits out here, that I'll be wasting my time even attempting to grow them.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Pauline

Hi, i sow mine in cells ( those with about 12 cells ) pop a couple of seeds in each ( no waste ) plant them out as plants much easier.

P S if they booth come up ( which is often ) you can either nip out the weaker one or prick it out for another plant.

Keep on  troshing J W

Hi Jay,

Thanks for the tip.

I only wish we could buy seed trays out here.  What I can't sow directly into the garden, I've made Richy's paper pots for.  The Bulgarians use yoghurt cartons and egg boxes but I don't eat yoghurt and I don't buy eggs  :D.  I do have some plant pots but they are a ridiculous price.

It's all trial and error this year and don't in all honesty expect good results but, you never know!!  Fortunately, seeds are really cheap out here at the equivalent of 38 pence per packet and I'm setting a few of everything in different parts of the garden to see what grows best where (if at all  :D).

Have you got any scrap wood that you could make seed trays out of?
How about oven trays are they dirt cheap over there? (were in greece,so i've done this)
Plastic milk cartons cut in half, even if they're wax cartons you can use them once :)

Many thanks for your suggestions.

I've been into a small hardware shop in our nearest market town and noticed some trays, similar to seed trays in depth but white and without the holes.  The shopkeeper was using them to display some goods in but she sold me four  :).  They hold 28 of Richy's paper pots.

I've got a couple of friends saving margarine tubs for me and then, of course, there's always plastic pop and beer bottles  :).  I've also got a really large oblong plastic bowl which I use as a clothes basket on wash days.  I could use that :D.  It's not my fault I can't do the washing until I can set my plants in the garden, is it??   :D  :D
