Leeks to start now
« on: March 20, 2009, 11:41 »
Hi,

I want to start my leeks off soon, and have a nice deep tray and compost etc. I don't have a greenhouse but I have just brought a coldframe from Lidl. So my question is, shall I get them sown and put them in the coldframe or should I wait?
If I can get them going now do I leave the lid open a jar or keep it closed?
Thanks

Get them sown, but they are fine outdoors. If you do sow indoors, get then out as soon as they are up. They take forever to actually grow, and it's best to grow them as hard as possible so that they can cope with the elements later in the year.

By outdoors do you mean in the cold frame or just in the tray outside? Thanks

You could put them in the cold frame until they germinate and then put them outside, preferably out of the way of cats and slugs.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Thanks for that, will give me something to crack on with this weekend  :)

Cats.... That's why I can't grow anything in the conservatory, they would think I have provided them with a nice luxury indoor toilet
